Phihong introduces 48W @ 12V Power-over-Ethernet splitter for use with IEEE802.3bt compliant Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE)
July 09, 2024

Fremont, CA (July 9, 2024) — Phihong, the POE market leader, is excited to announce the release of its new 48 watt Power-over-Ethernet splitter, which is ideal for network installations with high powered non-IEEE802.3bt legacy devices (PDs).

The POE48-120BT-R splitter converts DC input power, as defined by the IEEE802.3bt standard, to 12vdc output power. The POE48-120BT-R splitter will work with any IEEE802.3bt compliant PSE (Injector or Switch), and it is particularly useful for powering legacy PDs such as security cameras, access points or Kiosk’s that utilize traditional barrel jack connections for power.

By efficiently splitting power & data from an Ethernet cable, the POE48-120BT splitter, enables the seamless and cost-effective integration of POE technology into legacy network infrastructures.

How does the splitter work.

This splitter serves the purpose of converting PoE, which typically operates at higher voltages, into a lower voltage suitable for use by devices that require 12V. Here’s a breakdown of what it does:

  1. PoE Input: The splitter receives power and data through an Ethernet cable. This power is usually at a higher voltage, typically 56V, delivered according to PoE standards.
  2. Voltage Conversion: Inside the splitter, a DC-DC converter steps down the 56V input to a 12V output.
  3. Power Output: The splitter provides a 12V DC output that can be used to power devices that operate on 12V DC.
  4. Data Separation: The splitter also separates the data signal from the power, allowing the data to continue to the connected device via a standard Ethernet connection while providing the converted power through a separate power connector. Phihong PoE splitters support data speeds up to 1G.

Use Cases

  • Non-PoE Devices: It allows devices that do not support PoE to be powered using PoE infrastructure. For example, many IP cameras, wireless access points, or other network devices that operate on 12V DC can be powered using a PoE network.
  • Simplified Cabling: By using a PoE splitter, you can receive both power and data from a Power Sourcing Equipment through a single Ethernet cable, reducing the need for separate power supplies and power cables, which simplifies installation and reduces clutter.

Benefits

  • Flexibility: It enables the use of PoE for a wider range of devices, including those that require a different voltage than what PoE natively supplies.
  • Cost-Effective: Reduces the need for multiple power adapters and outlets.
  • Convenience: Simplifies the installation process, particularly in areas where running separate power lines is difficult or expensive.

Examples
If you have an IP camera that requires 12V DC and you want to install it in a location where there is no convenient power outlet, you can use a PoE injector to send 56V power over the Ethernet cable to the location. Then, the PoE splitter at the camera end will convert the 56V to 12V, powering the camera and passing through the data signal.

In summary, a 48W 12V output DC-DC PoE splitter is a useful device for integrating non-PoE equipment into a PoE network, simplifying installations, and reducing cable clutter.

“The POE48-120BT-R splitter allows building occupants to conveniently and effectively utilize PoE power from Power Sourcing Equipment that is already in place in the facility, eliminating the need to hire an electrician to install costly electrical wiring or having another external power supply occupy yet another one of the limited available power outlets,” states Tom Chin, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Phihong USA.
